Ecovite ™ is a newly-developed range of animal feed ingredients based on spray-dried fermentation products.

The products are produced at a newly erected, state-of-the-art spray dryer at the Simunye Sugar Mill in the Kingdom of Eswatini. This facility is owned and run by Enviro Applied Products (Pty) Ltd which has been supplying liquid fertiliser for 25 years.

The Ecovite range of products is supplied into the Southern African and offshore markets by EnviroBioAgri (Pty) Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Enviro Applied Products. Enviro Bio Agri specialises in the conversion of fermentation coproducts into high-value, functional animal feed ingredients and other products, primarily for use in the agricultural sector.

Meet the team

Our General Manager

Dr Brian Kernick heads up EnviroBioAgri. He holds a PhD (Agric) in Animal Nutrition from the University of Natal. He worked as a Senior Nutritionist at Kynoch Feeds during his early career in the 1980s and gained extensive experience in using fermentation and related products in animal feeds. Brian conducted research in and developed various animal feed supplements using these materials.

He has furthermore gained experience in applying fermentation products as a fertiliser, having served as Managing Director of LNT (Pty) Ltd based in Durban since 2000. Brian is responsible for establishing and building the Ecovite brand, which includes ensuring that the quality of the products meets all requirements and also that customer needs are met and fulfilled.

Marketing and Sales

Brian is assisted by Ben de Klerk as a sales and marketing consultant for the Ecovite range. Ben has a long history in animal nutrition.

Having matriculated from Sannieshof Agricultural School, Ben soon joined Kynoch Feeds, which would later become Yara Animal Nutrition. Here he remained for the duration of his corporate life; for many years right at the coal face of sales and marketing and later as regional manager in various regions in the northern parts of the country.

This is where Ben operated under the tutelage of the renowned Dr Billy Basson and also where he first met and worked with Brian. Ben retired after notching up 38 years at Yara and started consulting to continue servicing the market with his extensive knowledge in animal nutrition.

Technical Consultant

Stephan Breytenbach is a ruminant nutritionist with a MSc-Agric degree in animal nutrition and 30 years of experience in the feed industry. Stephan’s journey includes being a nutritionist at Kynoch Feeds, a technical manager at Voermol Feeds and an industry manager of Protea Animal Feeds. Technology

How it works

Spray drying involves atomising the liquid feedstock into droplets inside a large spray drying tower. The moisture is rapidly evaporated by hot air and a fine powder is produced. An automated feeder delivers wood chips into a specially-designed oven to heat the air. Temperature and pressure within the process are continuously monitored and meticulously controlled.

Quality control is of vital importance

The consistency of the liquid feedstock is key to producing high-quality products, and this is attained by the proximity to the distillery and the vertical integration of the plants. This also allows using a fixed formula to produce Ecovite products and contributes to reliable and homogenous output.

The various stages of the process are closely monitored by appropriate control systems to ensure Ecovite product quality and consistency.

Sustainability in all regards

The conversion of fermentation products into animal feed ingredients through spray drying eliminates potential waste.

Wood chips are used as a source of energy to evaporate the moisture in producing Ecovite products. Wood chips are a renewable source of biomass that can be produced sustainably, in an  environmentally responsible manner, unlike coal, gas or oil, which are commonly used to produce heat.
